2020 Fall CHS Writes! Contest
The CHS Writes! Contest is an writing contest that recognizes winning authors in a special section of the literary magazine and awards them with a prize. Winning the contest is a prestigious honor and accomplishment which the winner may cite as needed. The next competiton will run mid November through December 30th.
Eligibility:
Eligibility:
- Must be a student (or faculty member) currently at Calabasas High School
- Must submit a literary work or artwork in a PDF format Issue via our Google Form
- Submissions are due December 30, 2020
- All submissions must be submitted via our Google Form by clicking one of the "Click Here To Submit" buttons on this website.
- Only submit one submission at a time. The types of literary submissions we accept are:
- Poetry/Prose (up to 3 poems/prose pieces, each piece 1 page max)
- Article/Essay (single piece, 3 pages max, include prompt for essays)
- Short Story (single piece, 3 pages max)
- Original Artwork. (single piece - photograph, drawing, painting, digital art, 3-D)
- If you would like to submit Artwork, please make sure that the artwork fits on a standard 8.5" x 11" sheet.
- All text should be in 12 pt Times New Roman font, double spaced. The only exception is for Concrete Poetry. All submissions should also have a title.
- All work submitted must be original. If any work you submit is found be not of your own creation, then the owner will be contacted and your submission rescinded.
The review board will evaluate each submission based on 4 criteria:

The winner of the 2020 CHS Writes! contest will receive the following:
- Recognition and publication of their work in CLM Volume II
- School-wide recognition via announcements
- Recognition on our website and social media platforms
- A special interview that will be published along with their work
- A $25 Barnes and Nobel gift card
2020 Fall CHS Writes! Contest Winners
We are pleased to recognize the 2020 Fall CHS Writes! Contest winners Avery Grove, Malyssa Eddy, and Lily Velashjerdi. Avery is a senior at CHS and won for her prose piece Beyond the Frame which discusses beauty as inspired by Pablo Picasso’s “The Weeping Woman”. Avery plans to study creative writing and political science in college. Malyssa is a junior at CHS and won for her concrete poem Day after Day which relates 2020 to the rain and is shaped liked an umbrella. Lily is a sophomore at CHS and won for her whimsical and relatable artwork Clorox and TP which forms the numbers 2020 using the products in the title. Their works will be featured in Volume II of the Calabasas Literary Magazine. Congratulations to the three winners and all who submitted works reflecting 2020, a year of challenge and change.
2020 Spring CHS Writes! Contest Winners
We are pleased to recognize the 2020 Spring CHS Writes! Contest winner sophomore Lillia Koepke! Lillia is a sophomore at CHS and won for her poem, Happiness, which she penned during the COVID-19 pandemic. Writing is one of Lillia's favorite hobbies, stress-relief methods, and gift ideas. Her poem will be featured in the next edition Volume II of the Calabasas Literary Magazine.
2019 CHS Writes! Contest Winners
We are pleased to recognize the 2019 CHS Writes! Contest winners Lauren Krasilovsky and Lexine David. Lauren, a senior at CHS, won for her prose piece, Retracing Footsteps, which relates her experience walking through Majdanek Concentration Camp where her grandmother, a Holocaust survivor, spent much of her time during World War II. Lexine, a junior at CHS, won for her poem Soul Weaver and original illustration. Lexine based this poem on her short story by the same name. Her artwork details the creature in her poem which explores the primary emotion of fear. Catch their works in CLM Volume 1. Congratulations to Lauren and Lexine!
